When Is Your Kitten Ready For An Adult Collar?

Supakit cat collars come in two varieties, 'kitten' and 'adult' size. But we're often asked: how do you know when your kitten is ready to switch over to an adult collar?

It may surprise you to learn that it has nothing to do with the age or size of your cat! It's all about their weight - if your kitten weighs more than 2.5kg / 5.5lbs - then they are ready to move up to our adult collar range.

Can't my cat just keep wearing its kitten collar?

A kitten collar is perfectly safe for all cats, whatever their size or weight. But once your cat is heavy enough for an adult collar, you may start to notice that their kitten collar starts to fall off more often.

That's because a kitten collar has a very sensitive breakaway buckle, designed to trigger safely on the littlest of cats. It's perfect for keeping small, lightweight kittens safe, but once your little one has grown to over 2.5kg/5.5lbs, that same buckle can start to trigger and fall off during the rough and tumble of their normal play.

Luckily, that's where an adult collar comes in! The adult collar's breakaway buckle is firmer, so for cats who are safely over the weight limit it has more staying power. The result is a collar that will stay with your cat, wherever they may go.

How to weigh your cat

How do I know how much my cat weighs?

The simplest way is to ask your vet how much your cat weighed at their latest check up. But if it's been a while, or you can't remember the figure, it's easy to do at home.

Simply pick your cat up, step on a set of bathroom scales whilst holding them - and note the figure.

Then weigh yourself without your cat, and subtract the second figure from the first one.

(Weight of you + cat) - (Your weight) = (Your cat's weight)

What if my cat has a very small neck?

Both our adult and kitten collars are very adjustable, and there's very little difference in their minimum size. In a small number of cases (usually with very rare breeds), we've come across cats who are over 2.5kg/5.5lbs but whose necks are too small for an adult collar - if this is the case please contact us at hello@supakit.co and we'll be happy to advise.

Luckily, however, these cases are the exception! 99.9% of cats over the weight threshold will have no problems at all adjusting the length of an 'adult' collar to fit them perfectly.
